Auditability
Every action by an AI coding agent must be attributable, reversible, and logged. Auditability means you can trace which agent identity performed what action, on which resource, at what time, under what justification, and with what outcome. If an agent introduces a bug, misconfiguration, or security incident, you must be able to roll back or remediate and understand the root cause. Logging should include agent identity, role, scope, approval status (if applicable), and change details. Reversibility means you can undo the change or mitigate its impact. Governance needs to define rollback mechanisms or change-freeze conditions for agents. When audit trails are missing, you end up with a poor understanding of “who changed what and why,” which makes incident response slow and uncertain. Proper auditability also supports compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., for access logs, change history, and role review).

Without auditability, you cannot ensure AI accountability and oversight, traceability, or governance integrity, which defeats the purpose of the governance program.
To strengthen implementation, define a sample log schema. For example, use a timestamp, agent ID, user ID, action type, resource path, approval status, and rollback reference, or link to a pre-built compliance template in your governance toolkit for consistent formatting.
Governance Framework for Engineering Teams
Phase 1 is visibility: You need to know every place agents run and which repositories and tools they interact with. Map agent identities, triggers, and environments before you change policy. Add basic logging to capture prompts, actions, and results with timestamps and IDs.
